From June 30, 2025, every private rental must comply with the Healthy Homes Standards, covering insulation, fixed heating, moisture ingress, drainage, and ventilation. Properties rented before July 1, 2021 must be up to code by this date—or face penalties of up to $7,200 per property.
In Queenstown, where sub-zero winters are common, heating and insulation standards are especially critical. Rental properties must have a fixed heating source capable of warming the main living area to at least 18°C.
